If what you say about his performances after the accident is true, it may be that he felt he could not just rely on his good looks -- not that he ever did -- but searched for the inner core of the character, or something along those lines. I do believe that his work actually became more dimensional and interesting AFTER the terrible accident that permanently altered his face. I love Clift in The Heiress and A Place in the Sun, but I believe his two best film performances are much later, in The Misfits and Judgment at Nuremberg, both very heart-rending character roles.
