I tend to agree with your comment that you like the Bantam covers better than the books themselves! Those covers were great! Aside from "The Monsters" and "Land of Terror" I am often disappointed by the Doc Savage novels, and there are many that I still haven't gotten around to reading.

I think all Doc Savage fans were hoping this would be a great movie and start a new series, but it was a misfire on almost every level. The worst part is that aside from fans like ourselves and some comics writers, the character seems to have been completely forgotten in popular cultural terms. Too bad!Williamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03053290865549099074noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8212867859094085036.post-90403023268748667762023-10-30T05:03:15.578-04:002023-10-30T05:03:15.578-04:00I was SO EXCITED to see this movie when it came ou...I was SO EXCITED to see this movie when it came out. I was pretty much obsessed with collecting the Bantam paperbacks--those amazing covers just hit me where I lived (more so than the novels themselves, frankly). But I recall telling my friends and family that they HAD to see this movie--I mean, George Pal doing Doc...? It just had to be great! Well, of course it wasn't--but I was such a zealot that I actually convinced myself it was good and embarrassed myself by strenuously defending it. Later I came to my senses, but facing up to HOW bad it was was difficult. Small wonder, since it's probably one of the biggest movie disappointments of all time. I think you're absolutely right that Ely would've made a pretty good Doc--but the movie around him was so BATMAN-like (years after that kind of camp was long dead) and the rest of the casting so wrong-headed it was ultimately just puzzling--how could George get every aspect so completely wrong? I think this movie did kill any hope of a future Doc movie franchise--forever and always. And it ended George's career, too. A crying shame.

But another spot-on review!

--MarkMark Shawnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8212867859094085036.post-72718735984502084392018-11-22T20:17:00.346-05:002018-11-22T20:17:00.346-05:00He had his greatest success as Tarzan and on telev...He had his greatest success as Tarzan and on television at that. Must have disappointed him that this didn't turn into a successful movie series.
